Artistic Director / Choreographer

Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey Seda is the Artistic Director/Choreographer of Kybele Dance Theater, which she founded in 2003 in Los Angeles after she completed her dance education and performed with many local choreographers and companies.  Seda’s choreography is influenced by her backgrounds in French ballet technique and The Royal Academy of Dance, London ballet technique as well as her contemporary modern dance education from UCLA’s WAC Department and the Ailey Program.

Seda is an adjunct professor at Santa Monica College teaching beginning, intermediate and advanced modern as well as beginning ballet technique classes.  In addition, Seda is choreographing for both Santa Monica College’s Synapse Dance Theater and Global Motion companies.  She also teaches at Yuri Grigoriev School of Ballet’s youth program and open adult classes as well as YNS’s open adult classes.  Seda prepares students for prestigious scholarship competitions such as Prix de Lausanne, Youth America Grand Prix and Elite with teaching technique and her original choreography. Her choreography for these competitions has earned herself the 2018 Outstanding Choreographer YAGP Las Vegas, 2017 Outstanding Choreographer YAGP Las Vegas, 2016 Outstanding Choreographer from Los Angeles Youth America Grand Prix and the 2015 Elite Original Choreography Awards.  She also prepares students for college dance program auditions and summer intensive programs that lead into company internship opportunities such as Alvin Ailey, Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theater, and other international programs.

She has produced and choreographed multiple works that have won her choreography awards and her pieces have been presented in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Long Beach, Fresno, Concord, San Jose, Palm Desert, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Istanbul, Turkey. KDT has received awards from MAD BAD Festival, Dance Under the Stars Festival, and RAW 2011 and won 1st Place at the 2016 Front and Main Festival in Temecula.

With a background in various techniques like Horton, Release, Limon, improvisation, contemporary and variety of ethnic dance forms, Seda ultimately found her own voice and movement vocabulary when she formed KDT. Her choreography showcases the power of story telling through mixing gestures with technique and in doing so building bridges between cultures and genders, while drawing upon her heritage to create innovative works that stretch the boundaries of modern dance while infusing a global perspective.  Her choreographic designs awaken the audience with accenting forgotten moments of life through fusing contemporary dance with Turkish imagery through a diverse repertory created to inspire, think, and educate.
